HIGHLIGHTS: Lazio 4-1 Milan
The first loss for Milan in the new season.
Milan capitulated in Rome on Sunday afternoon, falling to a 4-1 defeat to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. Ciro Immobile bagged a quick-fire hat trick, and Luis Alberto made it 4-0 before Riccardo Montolivo scored a consolation goal in a game that the Rossoneri will want to quickly forget but must learn from.
Milan’s team featuring expensive summer signings including Leonardo Bonucci, Lucas Biglia and Ricardo Rodriguez just about held their own until Italy striker Immobile scored a 38th-minute penalty following Franck Kessie’s foul on Luis Alberto.
Immobile’s second, from a Senad Lulic cross only four minutes later, rocked Milan, who were hapless after the break as Marco Parolo set up Immobile to complete his treble before the latter played in Luis Alberto for the fourth.
Riccardo Montolivo pulled a goal back from distance before the hour, but not even the late dismissal of Parolo could help them save face.
The game had been delayed by an hour after flash floods in Rome. Roads were inundated following heavy rainfall, while Metro lines in the Italian capital were closed down.
The Stadio Olimpico pitch itself was not an issue as the surface had been covered by sheets on Saturday, but there were large banks of empty seats inside the stadium as supporters struggled to get to the game. Lazio’s Marco Parolo was sent off in injury time for a second bookable offence.
